A micro wedding seems to be the best one to have right now. And, no, it’s not just for introverts. Even those who love to bask in the spotlight can enjoy this trending wedding style.

What’s a micro wedding?

Planning a wedding is a feat. Even the most organised may need help from a professional. The beauty of a micro wedding? It makes planning easier. (Not entirely easy but definitely not as nerve-wracking as planning something that involves 200 people.)

A micro wedding is exactly what you think it is! An intimate celebration where the guest list is considered and curated.

It’s still the same as any other traditional wedding (depending on your culture and family rituals); it’s just the size of the party that’s different.

So it’s not like an elopement or going to the court house with just a couple of witnesses. It’s a “proper” wedding, only with fewer people.

However, some see the micro wedding as a “part one” of a bigger wedding. They would hold an intimate celebration as somewhat of a prelude to a “sequel wedding,” where the guest size is bigger.

what is a micro wedding

What size is a micro wedding

Micro weddings typically have 50 guests or fewer. The goal is to make the celebration as intimate as possible, with only those who are truly near and dear to you as a couple.

What is a minimony?

There’s also the minimony, which is even smaller than a micro wedding. This type of celebration has 10 guests and fewer. It could be parents and siblings, your best of friends, and the officiant. That’s it!

Don’t be misled; it’s still just as “traditional” as weddings go. You still have the same rituals. There is still also a reception followed by the ceremony.

What is an elopement?

In the past, elopements were the kinds of weddings that the couple would go through just by themselves, typically in a different location or country. These days, however, we’ve been seeing some who do elopement differently, adding in a couple of choice guests to their party.

Why a micro wedding

The choice of what to do on (and how to do) your big day is personal, of course. If you’re a couple who don’t particularly love huge crowds and are scared of the thought of being in front of hundreds of people, the micro wedding is the way to go.

You get to enjoy all the parts of a traditional wedding, minus the many pairs of eyeballs set on you. Not to mention the savings you'll get to enjoy!

How to DIY a micro wedding

If you decide that a micro wedding is for you and you want to be incredibly hands-on. No wedding coordinators, no problem. Here’s a quick guide on how to do it yourself. These are, of course, exclusive of securing the date for your wedding and getting all your documents sorted!

Start with the theme

It all begins with the big picture. Would you like a garden party? Would you prefer a rooftop soiree? A picnic-like celebration perhaps. There are lots of ways to go about your wedding, but you and your partner are truly the only ones who can decide.

Once you lock in your theme, everything else will follow.

Pro tip: Make the celebration feel even more intimate by opting for your or a loved ones’ private venue (with their permission, of course).

Decor, aesthetics, the works

Venue? Check. It’s time to plan how the celebration will look and flow. Having a mood board is great for this. You’ll get to see in a nutshell what the overall look will be. This will also help you narrow down what other elements of your wedding to include. Would you like a three-tiered cake? Should you opt for a specific-cuisine-themed catering?

Pro tip: Use Pinterest to get inspiration and Canva to lay out the look. And then start a checklist of things you need to buy or secure.

The guest list

Perhaps the most important element of a micro wedding. This has to be one of the first things you nail. Sit down with your partner and have a common goal in mind: invite only those who will truly share and bring joy on your special day.

It’s your wedding. You get to do it your way.
