What is autumn racing carnival?
Autumn Racing Carnival, also called the Sydney Carnival or Sydney Autumn Carnival, is a major racing event held in Sydney in March and April.
Hosted by the Australian Turf Club (ATC), it’s six weeks of action-packed and fashion-filled activities.
While Sydney is the hub of this season’s racing festivities, Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has also stepped up this year to make autumn memorable for everyone.
Like other racing carnivals, this season's is not just about having fun with family and friends trackside but also dressing up and expressing yourself with fashion.
Each season is great for styling with headwear but the combination of cooler weather and hats is unmatched.
What to wear to autumn racing carnival 2025
Not sure how to dress your best for the season? Here are some quick tips:
Skip straw and think wool
When planning on hat options, felt and wool are the materials to go for. These are not only more practical and functional but the texture just matches the season’s vibe better.
Deeper is better
Now, we love brights here. However, we’re also not completely averse to playing with deeper colours during this season.
If you’re like us and you can’t stand not having anything bright, a little accent to your outfit will do the trick.
Put a spin on trends
When you’re out of ideas, look at trends and think of ways to make it your own!
Whether that’s the mocha mousse (Pantone's colour of the year) or 2025's lucky colours, the key is in getting inspired but staying true to your style.
Of course, racing clubs have dress codes. So make sure you adhere to those when planning your outfits. There are themes per race day too.
Ladies' Day is usually all about pastels and pinks (like Oaks Day) and Star Championships Day calls for black and white (like Derby Day).
