You can call the Australian Open the younger, hipper cousin of Spring Racing Carnival. Fans flock Melbourne to catch the athletic action, but you would be missing out if you discount the fashion.

The Grand Slam Tournament, held from 12 January to 1 February 2026 at Melbourne Park, plays host to the world’s greatest in tennis. It also attracts style lovers and celebs (who happen to be fans of the sport). Among those who’ve been seen at the sidelines are Kendall Jenner and Emma Corrin.

If you’re watching the games this year and want to level up your look, allow us to help you find the best outfits.

Is there a dress code for the Australian Open?

The good news is the Australian Open doesn’t have a very strict dress code, unlike Spring Racing Carnival. But even though it’s not as formal as Wimbledon, there are some style rules you’d want to follow so you can feel and look your best while watching the games.

It is a special event, so you’d want to wear your best. It goes without saying: no flip flops, no ripped jeans, no team jerseys, no gym clothes and short shorts.

What to wear to the Australian Open — outfit ideas

So what do you wear to the games? While there is no prescribed theme, the AO has always inspired goers to wear outfits in the sports luxe category. The part where it becomes tricky is in striking the perfect balance between casual and put-together. There’s also Melbourne’s sun and its infamous unpredictable weather.

If you’re unsure where to start, here are some outfit ideas.

Off-Court Tennis

Take a page off pro athletes’ style books and wear something that performs well off-court. Think: a tennis skirt paired with a tank top (and a jacket in case the weather acts up), finished off with your favourite pair of sneakers and a cap to ward off sun rays.

Pretty Preppy

Nothing screams preppy more than tennis. Did you know that Ralph Lauren, the godfather of preppy style, is dressing the Australian Open staff for the sixth consecutive year this year? If that’s not the go sign you needed to try a preppy outfit this year, then we don’t know what is. Say yes to collared polo shirts, lightweight cardigans, flared skirts with a bit more structure or bermuda shorts.

Bloomin’ Breezy

The games will not be the only ones to heat up during the Australian Open. It will literally be hot outside, so make sure you’re wearing something to help cool you off. When picking outfits, look out for these two magic materials: linen and cotton. Whether you’re more comfortable with a dress or more of a matchy-matchy outfit wearer, you’ll find that the best way to go is to choose one in your signature silhouette and the breeziest material you can get.

White Delight

There’s something about white and tennis. Pair your tennis dress or set with a pair of white sneakers. Add personality and a bit of edge to the look by accessorising with a bright-coloured hat or headband (green and red are great options) and gold jewellery.

Regally Relaxed

Keep your outfit relaxed so you can focus on the game. Here’s a no-fail outfit formula: oversized white shirt, denim shorts, ballet flats, a good hat.
