The Unique Allure of Autumn Racing

Learn everything you need to know — from race schedules to how to ace your look.

What is Autumn Racing Carnival?

It's no secret that Spring is the biggest season for racing. But don't dismiss the Autumn races.

They are just as special and have a unique allure.

The weather is cooler and the foliage is warmer.

The races happen from March to May, and different states have different events catering to lovers of a good time and great fashion.

Yes, the celebrations are just as big as Spring's, and the fashion stakes are just as high.

In 2026, the Victoria Racing Club are beefing up their search for the best Fashions on the Field, while the Australian Turf Club play host to a fashion show featuring the trends of the season and a competition for the best in fashion.

If you don't have tickets yet, now's the time to secure them.

Once you've locked in the date, prep for your best time yet.

One thing that will make you feel confident? Wearing an ensemble that makes you feel like your best self.

It's important to note that there are dress codes for these events though.

These may vary depending on the location, the event and the area you'll be in. While the races are steeped in tradition, dress codes have become a bit more lax in the past few years. Guests at the Members' area are expected to follow traditional dress codes more closely while those in the General Admissions area are given the opportunity to dress a little bit more relaxed.

The general rule of thumb is to keep it classy and elegant. For women, think special occasion or something you might wear to a wedding, a graduation and more — that can be a dress, jumpsuit, a top and bottom pair. For men, opt for tailored pants, a collared shirt with tie, and a jacket, sports coat or blazer.

Fun fact: If you're attending the races from overseas, wearing your country's formal national wear is a big "yes!"

Style Do's and Don'ts

Dress up like you mean it.

DO

Consider wearing autumn colours — black, brown, maroon, jewel green and more.

DO

Have fun with textures and patterns. Autumn is great for exploring these styles because they make neutral colours more visually interesting. Think velvet, corduroy and tweed.

DO

Cap off your look with headwear. The right one will elevate your ensemble in an instant.

DON'T

Wear a gown. Think cocktail instead of black tie.

DON'T

Wear jeans, denim shorts and jackets; tattered, torn or ripped clothing; joggers, sport shoes and slippers.

DON'T

Slack on grooming. Fashion includes beauty too!
