What Is the Meaning of Galentine’s Day?

Galentine’s Day is an unofficial holiday to celebrate and honour female friendship (though if it were up to us, that definitely should be official).

It’s a day dedicated to appreciating the women in your life — sister, best friend, colleague, mentors, and more — by spending quality time together.

No romance here, it’s all about celebrating platonic love and female friendships. Take it as a chance to share your gratitude to the lovely women in your life, strengthen your bonds, and create fun memories to look back on!

Is Galentine’s Day Only for Singles?

Of course not! Galentine’s Day may be for friendships, but it’s not just for single ladies who are friends. No matter your romantic status, if you have a friend who happens to be female, this day is for you!

Is February 13th Galentine’s Day?

Yup, Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day. The timing is intentional so it’s not celebrated the same day as V-Day — so friends get a dedicated day and not go overshadowed by romantic themes.

The date is not set in stone though. If there’s a different date that works for you and your friends — say, the 13th falls on a weekday, you’re free to pick whatever date works for you. The goal is just to celebrate with friends!

Who Invented Galentine’s Day?

The celebration originated from the hit TV show Parks and Recreation. In a 2010 episode titled Galentine’s Day, the character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, goes on a festive brunch with her closest girlfriends where she showers them with gifts and compliments.

How cute is it that the fictional holiday started being celebrated by real people? Over time, it has become a more popular event. Many businesses and brands have jumped on the holiday and it’s become celebrated by women the world over.

How to Celebrate Galentine’s Day 2025

Celebrating for the first time or just looking for creative ways to have fun with your girls on the day? Here are some ideas to try.

1. Host a Galentine’s Brunch

Take inspiration from where the holiday was born! Gather your friends for brunch filled with delectable treats, mimosas, and lots of conversations.

2. Have a Spa Day

Book a trip to the day spa and treat yourselves to much-deserved relaxation. Or if you’re up for it, DIY the event at home with sheet masks and a mani-pedi session.

3. Watch a Movie or TV Show

Wear your PJs and have a cosy night in with the girls. Make sure one of the classics is playing — from Legally Blonde to Devil Wears Prada.

4. Indulge in a Wine and Cheese Night

Classy, cosy — and cheese? Host a wine and cheese pairing night with your besties. Squeeze in a bit of parlor games too.

5. DIY Gift Exchange

If giving gifts is your love language, this is the perfect activity for you. But don’t just hand out presents. You already know this, but it’s the thought that counts! Give your friends a handwritten note or a custom box of their favourite things. We’re sure the appreciation will be overflowing.

6. Support Women-Owned Businesses

There’s nothing quite like spreading the love for women on this day! So why not take it up a notch by supporting women-owned businesses? Shop from local, female-owned brands and extend the empowerment.

Galentine’s Day is more than just a fun excuse to celebrate with friends—it’s a beautiful reminder of the importance of female friendships. So, mark your calendar for February 13, 2025, and start planning the ultimate Galentine’s Day celebration with your favourite ladies!
