Headstrong: Model Demi Brereton on Resilience and Creativity
In this instalment of Headstrong, our content series profiling movers and shakers in various industries in Australia, we chat to model Demi Brereton. Read on to learn about her values, inspirations, and style essentials.
1. Did you always want to be a model? What inspired and led you to this path?
I modelled as a little girl and absolutely loved it. After leaving school, I decided to give it another go as I was older, while still figuring out what I wanted to pursue career-wise.
I’m currently loving moving more into the media space incorporating my love for racing fashion and racing & equine welfare.
2. What’s it like growing up with a strong affinity to horses and racing?
It was an incredible and very unique upbringing, one I’m so grateful for. I was lucky enough to live around the world while growing up and attend schools overseas. I truly lived every little girl’s dream, growing up around horses and the excitement that came with the racing industry. But in saying that, there were also many sacrifices that had to be made because of my dad’s job. It’s definitely come with some incredibly hard and life-changing times too.

3. What’s something about working in fashion that people still often miss or misunderstand?
One thing people often misunderstand about working in fashion is just how much happens behind the scenes. From the outside, it can look like everyone has everything perfectly together, but in reality, things are often very last minute and can change so quickly, no matter how prepared you are. You have to be able to pivot, adapt and work under extremely tight timelines.
I also think people underestimate how much resilience it takes. You need a thick skin and the confidence to back yourself through all the ‘no’s’ that come your way. Rejection is a huge part of the industry, but if you truly want something, you keep showing up, keep putting in the work and make it happen regardless.
4. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt from a mentor, peer or role model?
Every rejection is a redirection, my mum would say this to me all the time and I do think it’s true! This has really helped my mindset with the job I’m in.

5. What’s the best thing about working in fashion, and the worst?
The best part is how creative you can be, the incredible people you get to meet, and having the flexibility that comes with the job.
The hardest part would have to be keeping up with how quickly the industry is constantly changing and evolving. It can definitely make you doubt yourself and question where you fit, but over the years I’ve learnt the importance of staying true to myself and just doing me.
6. What are your ultimate style essentials?
Timeless bag, shoes, sunglasses that you can rewear for years to come. & also I love a big or statement earring to help dress up an outfit.
7. How do you stay focused and inspired?
My family and friends definitely keep me focused when I’m feeling overwhelmed I like to switch off socials and spend quality time with them, it really helps me re set and re focus on work.
If we’re talking racing fashion I draw a lot of my inspiration from classic female style icons and modern-day fashion girls, blending elements of both to create my racing look.
