Your Guide to Beanies in Australia
The weather’s extremely cold. Your first instinct? Bundle up. We say yes, but also don’t forget your head. While it has been proven that you don’t really lose 90% of your body heat through your head (such an interesting claim too, right?!), your head still gets cold, of course. Give it some warm loving! Beanies are a great way to do it.
The 411 on beanies
A beanie’s one of the very few accessories that aren’t just fashionable but actually functional. Put one on and you’ve instantly levelled up your look — and added warmth and cosiness.
Made with warming materials such as wool or cashmere, this type of headwear is a great choice for cold weather. They’re also convenient not only to wear but also pack. Roll or fold and chuck it in your bag when you don’t need to wear it.
What's in a name?
This piece of headwear was given the name because of its function. It’s something to put on your bean a.k.a. your noggin. The first use of the terms is believed to be in the early 20th century when this style of headwear was worn by tradesworkers who spent most of their days outside.
Strictly speaking, hats have more structure and beanies are slouchier. But these days, pieces like beanies and berets are categorised as hats too.
Beanies vs bonnets
It’s understandable that they’re easily interchanged. While similar in construction and silhouette, beanies and bonnets are not the same. Classic bonnets traditionally have strings, while beanies don’t.

Different beanie styles
Slouchy
You’ll know it when you see it. These beanies have extra fabric that give them that distinctly slouchy look. It’s perfect for those with a more laid-back personal style.
Fisherman
This style’s quite the opposite of slouchy. It’s shorter and sits higher on the head. If you like keeping your ears warm too, this may be just a tad too short for you. It’s still a great option though if you’re the minimalist type.
Pom
This beanie’s base could be ribbed and or/cuffed — more on this in just a little bit — but the icing on this headwear cake is the fluffy pompom at the top. They’re a fun little embellishment, not entirely necessary but oh so fun.
Cuffed
Like the more traditional beanie style? Cuffed has a — wait for it — a fold-over cuff. They’re versatile and can be worn high on the head or low, depending on your look preference and how warm you’d like to feel.
Ribbed knit
You’re already accessorising, why not add some texture to your look too? A ribbed knit beanie has a vertical ribbed style that looks great with smart casual outfits.
How to choose the right beanie
We always say this (and we won’t get tired of it): The first thing to consider is your personal style. It will dictate what kind of beanie to go for! You have to pick one that goes well with other pieces in your wardrobe, of course.
Next, consider the material. Cashmere is luxurious and amazing but no doubt an investment. Wool is not as expensive but just as polished and functional. Cotton is the most lightweight option; it’s great for transitional weather (more for the tail-end of autumn than the thick of winter).
Last is the colour. You can go with something neutral, which goes well with most pieces in your wardrobe. Or, get this: choose a bold-coloured piece so it can be a focal point to your outfit (and maybe even serve as a conversation starter).
